Dear Members

I hope that you are all keeping safe and well. Over the last few days it has been Captain's Week at Longcliffe Golf Club, a week if I’m honest I didn’t expect to be hosting and taking place this year, but it did and what a fabulous week it was. Although some things had to be slightly different to keep us all safe and following the guidelines and recommendations, the week was a great success with some excellent golf and scoring during all three events. (Captain's Day for Ladies, Captain's Midweek, Captain's Day)

I have to mention a couple of excellent scores and feats this week, Adam Brind breaking par and shooting Gross 70 on Wednesday, Richard Wells going one better on the Saturday Gross 69, and there was even a hole in one by Harry Coe on Captain's Day (15th Hole) if you do see Harry, you must ask him about his last four holes, I won’t say anymore but WOW…. Overall the scoring seemed a little better on the Wednesday for most golfers than the Saturday, it must have been the added pressure/incentive I added for those playing Saturday “If you break par, your first drink is on me at the bar.” In total 21 people broke par on Saturday and I hope you all enjoyed your first drink on me. On Tuesday the Ladies got the worst of the week’s weather and although starting out dry the day got worse with each passing hour and each passing rain cloud. But this didn’t deter the Ladies from enjoying the day and with some great golf and scoring as well. The same incentive was on offer for the Ladies but my bar bill was a lot less on Tuesday with only Alison Groom breaking par.

As I previously mentioned earlier I had to host and run a Captains Week slightly differently this year, with Coronavirus effecting all our lives in many different ways, it was important I and all of us maintained and followed all the recommended guidelines. So with this I welcomed members at the first, the halfway house and out and about on the golf course. It was great to see and speak with so many members, a huge thank you for your support.

It was great to see the Clubhouse reopen on Saturday again slightly different to normal, but seeing Paul and his team back behind the bar, I’m sure it was a welcome sight for many members. Many of you may have noticed that I didn’t run any raffles or any specific charity activities during the week due to the challenges with Coronavirus, thank you to those that donated during the week in the collection boxes or in the bottle on the bar. Please may I make a plea to all members do donate and support our Captains as much as possible, this year is a real challenge for Rachel and I to find ways of raising money for our chosen charities and for the charities themselves.

Before I announce the winners, I have a few people to thank. Firstly I thought the golf course was in fantastic condition and presented beautifully, so a huge thank you to Michael and his team for all your hard work and for giving us all a golf course we are all so proud and honoured to play each week. Thank you to Dave Mee, Ed Martin and everyone in the Pro Shop for organising the cards and booking all competitors in. I have to say a massive thank you to Rob Docherty (Doc) who reviewed all the cards after each competition and all in all over the three days reviewing just over 500 score cards, thank you Rob. Thank you to Dave Lewis for taking photos on each day, and some of these will be shared and on an A board in the clubhouse from Saturday 11th July. This year was really difficult in getting family members to help and support me this year out on the course each day due to social distancing guidelines and household mixing together. So, The last couple of people I have to thank is my Dad, Steve Harding for playing the role of starter on the first tee, some players may have spotted him with his earphones in on Saturday this wasn’t us keeping in constant communication, in fact he was listening to the Football and Leicester City. Lastly I could not have organised, set up and been able to run, host and offer the hospitality I did, without the support, help and hard work of my girlfriend Sharon, so a huge, huge thank you from me.

Now for the Winners, a full list of all the prize winners for all three days are attached and on the notice boards at the club, and displayed on the A board in the clubhouse.

- Captains Day for Ladies, Congratulations to Alison Groom with a great score in difficult conditions of 37pts.

- Captains Day Midweek, Congratulations go to John Perry with an excellent score of 41pts, pipping Steve Clark on count back.

Thank you to everyone for your support during my Captains Week and I hope you all enjoyed the week as much as I did.

Stay Well, Keep Safe, and I look forward to seeing you at the club soon.
